Alum (mainly potassium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate) is antibacterial and astringent. In TCM, it detoxifies, kills parasites, relieves dampness and itching, stops bleeding and diarrhea, clears heat and reduces phlegm, and is used for hyperlipidemia, duodenal ulcers and tuberculous hemoptysis. Industrially, it makes aluminum salts, baking powder, paints, tanning agents, water clarifiers and paper. As a food additive, its aluminum accumulates in the body. Excess aluminum blocks iron and calcium absorption, causing anemia and osteoporosis.
