Phosphorous acid (H₃PO₃) is an inorganic compound appearing as colorless to pale yellow ice-like crystals, highly soluble in water and ethanol. It gradually oxidizes to orthophosphoric acid in air and decomposes into orthophosphoric acid and phosphine when heated to 180°C, with a melting point of 73°C and a boiling point of 200°C. It is mainly used as a raw material for manufacturing plastic stabilizers, and is also applied in the production of synthetic fibers and phosphites.
